Measure BB changes Berkeley’s Rent Ordinance in several important ways.
Berkeley voters passed Measure BB in the November 2024 election, which amends Berkeley’s Rent Ordinance. Changes include, but are not limited to:
- Removing one “just cause” for eviction and modifying others.
- Most government-owned and subsidized units, like Section 8 and Shelter Plus Care units, will now be fully or partially covered by the Rent Ordinance and required to register. In the next several months, the Rent Board will be reaching out to owners of government-owned/subsidized units with more information about the new registration requirement and process.
- New notice requirements at the start of a tenancy.
- Provides the Board with the authority to penalize landlords for failure to properly file registration information.
- A new requirement that eviction notices direct tenants to the Rent Board for assistance.
- Shortening the timeline for when copies of eviction notices and unlawful detainers must be filed with the Rent Board.
- Tenants at certain properties now have the right to organize and form tenant associations.
