A randomly chosen sample of tenants will receive the survey in the mail.

Periodically, the Berkeley Rent Board surveys tenants to gather information on rental housing-related issues in Berkeley, and demographic information on Berkeley’s tenant community. This information is used to adjust rent regulations and Rent Board services to better serve the purposes of Berkeley’s Rent Ordinance, advise the City on relevant affordable housing policies, and promote community stability, particularly for the tenants most vulnerable to displacement.
Not all Berkeley tenants will receive a survey. We’ve randomly selected 2,600 tenants from our database of units that are fully covered by the Rent Ordinance (meaning the rent is controlled) to participate. These randomly selected tenants were mailed notification post cards in early October and should be receiving the survey by mail in mid to late October. The survey can be taken by mail or electronically.
We encourage all selected tenants to make their voices heard by completing the survey!
