New filing rules for Rent Board hearings go into effect on June 16, 2025
The Berkeley Rent Board has updated its rules regarding the filing of petition forms, response forms, and evidence. The updates will go into effect on June 16, 2025. As landlords and tenants increasingly utilize the internet and email in the hearing process, the new standards offer clear guidance on participating effectively while ensuring consistency and quality in the case record. These revised rules will also enable the Rent Board to process petitions more efficiently.
The filing rules lay out instructions on:
- How to properly complete petition and response forms;
- How to organize evidence with the use of an exhibit list form; and
- How to send filings to the Rent Board and other parties in your case.
Failure to follow the rules may cause delays in processing or lead to your filing being rejected.
It’s always advisable to consult with a housing counselor before submitting a petition. A housing counselor can help you assess whether you can file a petition based on your circumstances, guide you on which forms to use, and ensure that your filing adheres to the new filing rules. Counselors cannot give legal advice, including advising on whether a petition claim will be granted or not.
